Section Description:
The attendee will gain an appreciation of all the factors that go into
building clinical information systems in radiology. This includes
methods to evaluate systems (technology assessment), assurance that
workflow is addressed (RIS/PACS/DICOM), and gain an appreciation for the
science of informatics (informatics constructs).
101: Technology Assessment (Kicking the Tires) Paul G. Nagy, PhD
University of Maryland School of Medicine
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how to establish an evaluation grid for technical
assessment based upon the priorities of an organization's mission.
2. Discuss the dimensions of the evaluation categories and propose ways
to establish quantitative criteria.
3. Illustrate examples of how the criteria can be used to compare
strengths and weaknesses between vendors.
201:PACS/RIS/DICOM (The Traditional Informatics Tools)
Steve G. Langer, PhD
Mayo Clinic, Rochester
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the basics of imaging informatics and traditional constructs
in radiology.
2. Identify current imaging informatics challenges in health care.
3. Understand the basic IHE constructs.
301: Informatics Constructs (New Informatics Tools, Enterprise Integration)
Kenneth R. Persons, MSEE
Mayo Foundation
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe informatics considerations for integration of radiology
images and information with the Electronic Health Record.
2. Describe informatics considerations for correlating information that
originated from outside PACS system (from CDs, DVDs, or another PACS).
3. Understand informatics considerations for sharing information within
and outside of the enterprise.
